2025 Most Wired Security Trend Report
Healthcare organizations have successfully transitioned away from reactive, check-the-box cybersecurity compliance to build a more robust baseline of digital protections. However, as the sophistication of cyberattacks increases, true maturity is no longer measured by the volume of tools in an environment, but by operational resilience — the ability of those systems to function cohesively under the stress of an active threat to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
The 2025 Digital Health Most Wired (DHMW) Security segment confirms this progress, showing an optimistic 84.2% average adoption rate of critical security controls among surveyed organizations. This year’s analysis examines how healthcare is shifting from mere deployment to operational performance, ensuring continuity of care even when a cyber incident occurs.
The Most Wired Security Trend Report, sponsored by Zscaler, highlights findings from this segment of the survey and offers providers a wealth of insights to help drive increased maturity.
Among the findings in the report are:
- Strategic Governance as a foundation for operational resilience – Leading organizations treat cybersecurity as an enterprise discipline built on defined accountability and board engagement. Formal risk appetite statements and structured oversight separate those capable of quick, confident decisions from those operating by instinct.
- The “Integration Gap” is the primary hurdle to maturity – While adoption rates are high, a 21.5% Integration Gap exists where tools are in place but disconnected. True resilience requires closing these silos to deliver faster detection, coordinated response, and measurable performance gains.
- Zero Trust is a journey toward patient safety – Moving beyond universal multi-factor authentication, advanced organizations are adopting Zero Trust architectures to validate every access request. This shift from static perimeters to identity-based security is critical for containing breaches and limiting lateral movement.
- The biggest challenge to recovery is a lack of adversary testing – While 95% of organizations conduct simulations, only 66% run Red Team vs. Blue Team exercises. Without rigorous, full-scale recovery drills that simulate realistic attacks, organizations cannot validate their true Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs).
